Pianogrillo Extra Virgin Olive Oil
The Pianogrillo Farm has distinguished itself for the production of an Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVO) that has won several national and international awards.
The oil is characterized by intense aromas of unripe tomato and freshly cut grass: yellow-green in color, it is delicate, with a round and not overly invasive taste. It is mildly spicy, while often the acidity does not reach 0.1%.
The company, which boasts an overall cultivated area of over 80 hectares, is located in a panoramic position on the edge of the archaeological area of Akrillai, an ancient Neolithic settlement shrouded in mystery and lost in the mists of time. Of the total 80 cultivated hectares, 50 consist of olive groves some of which are very old, with plants that incredibly reach up to 800 to 900 years of age. The main type of olive variety is the legendary “Tonda Iblea”. Other varieties used in the Pianogrillo Blend are the “Moresca”, the “Nocellara Messinese” also known as “Verdese” and the modern “Carolea”.
Still today, in Pianogrillo, we can find lava stone oil grinders dating back to the 3rd century AD and, within the company’s grounds, an ancient early Christian necropolis located in the San Nicola area. For more than 300 years this place, rich in history, was the fief of the barons Piccione di Grassura and Molino d'Immezzo, originally from Acireale but who transferred north in search of advancing their careers. Today, the estate has been transformed into a modern farm by Lorenzo Piccione di Pianogrillo, the last descendant of the barons.
