Sicilin Purple Prawn is a crustacean native to the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. Very similar to the red shrimp, the purple shrimp is characterized by a lighter coloration with blue and purple hues.
These medium size purple prawns in 1 kg package are about 50 pieces per tray.
What makes Sicilian purple prawns special?
The shell that protects the shrimp is thinner than that of the red shrimp, and the upper part above the head has 3 teeth (versus 5 in the red shrimp). The purple shrimp is a very rare crustacean that lives in very deep seabeds, up to 1,500 meters: very popular in all traditional Mediterranean cuisines, it is recommended, as with the red shrimp, to eat it raw.

Depending on market availability, red shrimp could be sourced from vessels not flying the Italian flag, but still fished in the Ionian Sea FAO Zone 37.2.2 and processed in Mazara del Vallo plants.
